Abstract

The finite difference in the frequency domain (FD-FD) method is used here to analyze the propagation characteristics of a lossy dielectric waveguide. These characteristics are optically controlled by means of light incidence on a semiconductor layer positioned on the dielectric waveguide. In the formulation the vector wave equation, which describes the wave propagation, is expressed in terms of the transverse components of the magnetic field in a form of a conventional eigenvalue problem, and the spurious modes are eliminated, by implicitly including that the divergence of the magnetic field is zero. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
