Abstract

An energy-conserving time integration algorithm is shown to be stable, which contradicts certain statements in an article by Ortiz ( Comput, Struct. 24 167–168, 1986). In particular, for a time increment h, it is shown that the accuracy of the algorithm is O( h 2) for one degree of freedom, but typically is only O( h) for two or more degrees of freedom.
