Abstract

An event has been observed which is interpreted as the direct production of an electron pair by a helium nucleus of the cosmic radiation. The primary helium nucleus has a measured energy of (1.7 ± 0.5) · 105 GeV. The pair has an energy of 20± 4 GeV and initiates an electron shower.
