Abstract

Air pollution in India has increased very rapidly due to population growth, road transportation, burning of fuels, poor land use pattern, rapid economic growth, industrialization and urbanization with associated increase in energy demands. Lack of implementations of environmental regulations are also contributing to the bad air quality of most of the Indian cities. Air pollutants produced in any air shed are not completely confined, but at time trespassing all the geographical boundaries, hence do not remain only a problem of urban centres, but spread and affect remote rural areas supporting large productive agricultural land. Sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and particulate matters are some of the pollutants which are contributing to environmental pollution. The main objective of the current paper is to review the literature relating to the ambient air quality of India and assessment of their health impacts.
