Abstract

AbstractThe phenomenon of absorptive bistability in a two‐section injection laser is analysed employing the method of causal diagrams. Steady‐state rate equations for electrons in the gain (n1) and in the saturable absorber (n2) sections and for photons (np) can be represented by diagrams containing feedback loop attached to vertex np and encompassing vertex n2. Numerical analysis of typical cases confirms the crucial role played by the feedback relationships in producing the bistable regime.
