Abstract

The stochastic behaviour of a protective system consisting of one working unit (main unit) and two protective units subject to two types of failure—minor and major, has been investigated. Minor repair of the protective unit is done by the operator himself but major repair of both types of unit is completed by an expert repairman who is only available at the time of need. Failure time distributions of working and protective units are taken to be negative exponential whereas repair time distributions are arbitrary. The system is observed at suitable regenerative epochs to obtain reliability characteristics of interest to system designers and operation managers.
