Abstract

Elastic-plastic finite element calculations of a 90 degree pipe elbow with straight pipe ends have been carried out. A longitudinal through-crack is located at extrados-position of the elbow. The component is loaded by internal pressure. The FE-models used are generated by means of a coordinate-transformation program from cracked plates generated with usual mesh generators. Besides the evaluation of the structure mechanics behaviour (i.e. plastic zones and stress-distributions) the main point of interest is focussed on the fracture mechanics results like J- integral , crack opening behaviour including some amount of stable crack growth and the calculation of the leakage area.
