Abstract

This paper describes the analysis of a space-harmonic coupled-cavity slow wave structure (CC-SWS) for a high power Travelling Wave Tube (TWT), using the MAFIA code which is a three-dimensional electromagnetic field simulator. Method of computing the dispersion and impedance characteristics of the SWS has been discussed. Mesh size was optimised for speed and accuracy. Agreement between the computed and the experimental results for a typical C-band CC-SWS was achieved within 5% in respect of dispersion characteristics. CPU time on DEC-ALPHA work station was less than one hour. Analyses were carried out for both single-slot and double-slot CC-SWS with coupling slots both aligned and staggered in adjacent cavities. It was found that the staggering in coupling slots increases the cold pass bandwidth of the CC-SWS typically by 20%. An empirical formula of equivalent single-slot was proposed for a double-slot CC-SWS.
