Abstract

The reported accumulation of β2-agonist compounds in hair suggests the possibility of retrospective monitoring of the use of these growth-promoting drugs in cattle rearing. Here the applicability of different procedures for extraction of these drugs from hair was studied for the analysis of seven β2-agonist. The best treatment in terms of interference-free chromatograms and recovery was acidic extraction. Recoveries ranged from 100% (tulobuterol) to 34% (terbutaline and salbutamol). Acidic extraction of a physiological hair sample containing clenbuterol was as efficient as the widely used strong alkaline treatment and better than mild alkaline, methanolic, or enzymatic extractions.
