Abstract

Diesel engine noise is caused by vibration of the surfaces of the structure, accessories attached to the structure, and covers such as those over valves. Two basic forces cause vibration--combustion and the engines mechanisms. These forces combine to vibrate the structure in its preferred modes. Noise reduction can be achieved by lowering any of the forcing functions, couplings or responses. Complete or partial shielding of external surface is also effective.
