Abstract
The authors present a statistical analysis and discuss modelling of the duration of rain fades derived from data collected at 97 GHz using an experimental terrestrial line of sight link of 6.5 km which has been in operation since August 1998 across the city of Portsmouth. The presented results provide an insight into what can be expected at these frequencies if they are to be used for future urban terrestrial EHF communication systems. The possible implications for optimum data throughput are outlined.
