Abstract

Pressure-fed reaming method is used widely in HDD (horizontal directional drilling) projects. The parameters of rotary torque and axial tensile force are extremely important during drilling operation. In this paper, the model between axial tensile force and formation strength, drilling tool structures, drilling tool size, rotation speed, pulling back speed and rotary torque is introduced based on circumstances and operating conditions in construction. The possible factors are analyzed by mechanical method. The calculated data by quantitative model is from partial simulated experiments and quote typical engineering data. According to field experiments, the results indicated that calculated results conform to field data. The model could provide helpful information to the HDD contractors when using pressure-fed reaming bit.
