Abstract

Fault characteristics of inverter-based distributed generation (IDG) have significant differences with the traditional synchronous generator. This paper, considering the condition when a fault occurs in a distribution network with IDGs, investigates the system fault characteristics and associated changes in comparison to those of traditional power grids. According to the regulations of grid integration principle, particularly low-voltage ride through (LVRT) control strategy, fault current characteristics of IDGs are theoretically analyzed and an equivalent model of distribution network with the integration of IDGs is developed. An iterative calculation is proposed and conducted to acquire the values of fault currents and voltages for relaying protection when a fault occurs. A simulation system of a distributed generation network with IDGs is established in the time-domain environment in the MATLAB/ SimPowerSystem. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of theoretical analysis.
