Abstract
High power pulse generators are of great interesting in many regions. In this paper, a folded giga-watt long pulse generator is introduced. The pulse forming section of the generator is made up of two Pulse Forming Lines (PFL) and a curving transition section to joint two PFLs together. This type of high power pulse generator is compact in structure. Equivalent circuit of the generator is given and effect of the wave impedance of transition section on the output voltage is analyzed. The results show that to get flap top voltage at the load, wave impedance of transition section should match the impedance of PFL. Experiments are performed on pulse generator. At the gas breakdown voltage of ~720 kV, a square shape pulse with voltage ~360 kV and pulse power ~8.6 GW, pulse width ~260 ns was obtained at the load. The experiments results are in good agreement with theoretical analysis.
