Abstract
This paper presents analysis of a grid connected wind energy conversion system (WECS). The performance of the distribution system with and without WECS have analysed through simulation in MATLAB. Role of a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) in effective operation of grid along with WECS is also analyzed in details. The influence of the wind generator (squirrel cage induction generator) on the operation of grid system especially the power quality issues are discussed. The basic idea of WECS connection is to enhance the grid capacity and sharing of active power. However, as WECS uses asynchronous generator, the requirement of the reactive power for excitation of generator is drawn from the grid causing an increase in grid current. The integration of DSTATCOM reduces the reactive power burden on grid and regulates the active, reactive power exchange among grid, wind generator and DSTATCOM. A complete power balance analysis of the proposed system is presented under different operating conditions.
