Abstract

AbstractBasic behavior in human settlement, inhabitation, and travel environment can be categorized as watching, participation, and communication. Psychological factors of human behavior can be concluded as security, stimulation, and identification. Activities in outdoor public space can be concluded into 3 types: necessary activity, optional activity, and social activity, and great discrepancies exist in the requirements of material environment for each type of activity in every kind of space.Research of human settlement, inhabitation, and travel environment perception can be divided into two branches and four paradigms which are preliminary utilized in environmental assessment. Two branches include environmental science to assess the environment adaptive to human survival, and social culture. Four paradigms include expert paradigm, psychophysical paradigm, cognitive paradigm, and empirical paradigm.
