Abstract

A transmission matrix method (TMM), consisting of a 2D extension of 1D transmission matrix principles, is presented to compute the field distributions in 2D finite-size transmission line (TL) metamaterials (MMs) excited by an arbitrary source. This method, which is an MM generalization and extension of the method introduced by J.-H. Kim and M. Swaminathan (see IEEE Trans. Advanced Packag., vol.24, no.3, p.334-46, 2001) for packaged dense circuits, is a frequency-domain technique. Its main advantage is simplicity. A related, but more sophisticated, technique is the time-domain transmission line method (TLM), which was generalized for MMs by P.P.M. So and W.J.R. Hoefer (see IEEE MTT S Int. Microwave Symp. Dig., p.1779-82, 2004).
