Abstract

In Malaysia millions of people have gathered together social media such as blogs and microblogs, social networking sites, virtual gaming community, joint ventures, content communities and the virtual social world. The growth of social media has led to a significant increase in research into social media, as well as in the scholarly and media environment. This mix study therefore aims to address different social media problems through the monitoring of research patterns in Malaysia. Through the study of social media research papers, data has been collected from three main Malaysian communication publications, such as the Malaysian Journal of Media Studies (Jurnal Pengaja Media Malaysia), the Malaysian Journal of Communication, and the Global Media Journal - Malaysian Versio. Data were retrieved through content analysis. Conclusions on the theoretical context and study issues were established. Data have also been contrasted with the early social network advent (2010) onwards and the new social media period (2000-2020). The findings of the study offered insights into the country's social media trends and challenges for analysts and practitioners.
