Abstract
In Benguet province in the Philippines, vegetable farmers are producing crops under difficult circumstances. The choice of the right crop is of extreme importance for their survival. Using the conflict analysis model (CAM), the basic hypothesis that farmers are choosing a crop closest to the ideal crop in terms of several criteria is tested. Hereby a match is searched between their own (subjective) preferences and the characteristics of the crop. The results show that the model is able to reconstruct the crop choice process. In the majority of cases an indifference situation is found between the crop selected by the farmer and the one indicated by the model. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
