Wegner, G. ; Yackovich, F. H. Abstract Spectral observations of the red and blue C2 band signatures of nine white dwarfs are reported, along with stellar models constructed from the data. The study concentrated on the influence of stellar evolution and accretion of interstellar matter on elemental abundances in white dwarfs and the possibility that material from deeper levels can be brought to the surface by convective forces. The data were gathered with a 2.1 m telescope equipped with a spectrograph at Kitt Peak during September 1980-May 1982. The stellar atmospheres were He-dominated and had C, N, and O ratios less than a hundredth of those in the sun. Carbon abundances decreased with decreasing effective temperatures. The correlation between abundance and temperature gives credence to a convective supply concept, thereby opening up a means for studying stellar core material in terms of atmospheric abundances.
