Abstract

Many of the communications systems addressed in this book begin with an analog signal or have an analog signal for the output. For example, a radio receiver accepts an analog signal from the antenna, processes it and outputs either an analog audio signal or digital data depending on the information being received. A radio transmitter, on the other hand, often accepts either an analog audio input or a digital data stream. The signal is then processed and output as an analog signal that can be applied to the antenna. It is, therefore, extremely important to be able to convert between analog and digital signals. This chapter deals with the important subjects of analog-to-digital (A/D) and digital-to-analog (D/A) conversion.
