Abstract
Television has been the most important communication medium in the twentieth century, and will remain important in near future. As mentioned in Chapter 1, current television systems are not truly multimedia systems, since there is no interactivity and independence between different media. However, with the advent of digital television and WebTV, the scenario is likely to change in the near future. In this Chapter, our focus is the principles of digital and high definition television. However, in order to appreciate the digital television fully, one should know the principles of analog television standards. Hence, we first present an overview of the analog television system, followed by a brief introduction to the digital and high definition television systems.
