Abstract

This study aims to describe the intrinsic elements contained in the novel Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm. These elements include characterization, plot, setting, point of view, language style, theme, and message—data obtained based on documentation techniques with research procedures and content analysis techniques with an objective approach. The results of this study indicate that the intrinsic element plays an essential role as a basis for analyzing literary works. The study results concluded that factors such as characterization, plot, setting, point of view, language style, theme, and message play a role in building the theme and message elements. Then, these intrinsic elements are used to interpret something other than literary works. Thus, it is recommended that literary works can be empowered to describe various phenomena that exist in society.
