Abstract

Congenital heart disease (CHD) affects 8/1000 live births. The two factors that most influence the choice of anaesthetic and monitoring for non-cardiac surgery are: • the surgical procedure • the degree of cardiorespiratory impairment resulting from the congenital heart defect. In the UK, there are no national guidelines regarding the experience of the anaesthetist who should manage these children, or the institution at which the surgery should be undertaken. It is prudent to refer children with complex uncorrected or palliated heart disease to a specialist centre for perioperative management, depending on the urgency of surgery.
