Abstract

The type of surgery performed on the spine encompasses operations for trauma, deformity, and myelopathy. The complexity of procedures is continuing to increase and older patients with significant co-morbidities are being offered ever more major procedures for which they would have previously not been considered. Increasing numbers of decompressive procedures for metastatic spinal cord compression are being performed as a result of improved oncological therapies. Developing areas include surgery for degenerative scoliosis and an increase in operations performed on the anterior lumbar spine.
