Abstract

SummarySummaryThe adequacy of prilocaine and felypressin (Citanest) as a local anaesthetic for large loop excision of the transformation zone was assessed in 50 women. Visual analogue scores of pain experienced were completed immediately after the procedure and every 2 hours subsequently that day, if woken in the night and upon waking the next day. Twenty-seven women (54 per cent) experienced pain; eight required analgesia. All women were pain free by the next day. Prilocaine and felypressin failed to provide adequate pain relief for women after large loop diathermy excision. With day case procedures, it is imperative that patients do not experience pain once at home when the clinic is closed. Analgesia for these women is currently unsatisfactory and needs improvement.
