Abstract

A relatively simple and inexpensive anaerobic calorimeter was designed and evaluated by using a Hy-Cal Engineering BI-7 bidirectional heat-flux sensor to measure heat output from magnetically stirred I-L flask fermentations. The production of ethanol and cumulative heat output by Zymomonas mobilis were both linearly proportional to glucose concentrations up to 160 g/L.
