Abstract

Eighty six wound cultures were obtained in 27 bedridden patients suffering from decubitus ulcers at various stages of development. Specimens were obtained by use of sterile swabs placed immediately after collection in semisolid Stuart's medium until culturing. All 86 cultures were positive for aerobic germs; 27 of the 86 were also positive for strictly anaerobic micro-organisms. The latter were mainly isolated from stage 3 lesions. Bacteremia occurred in 6 patients (all exhibiting stage 3 lesions); in 5 of them it was due to Bacteroides fragilis, isolated in pure culture (2 cases) or associated with Enterobacteriaceae (3 cases).
