Abstract

Abstract: The recovery of leukocyte concentration in blood after chlorambucil(C)‐induced leukopenia was more rapid in intact than in castrated male rats. The enhancement of recovery caused by testicular hormones could be mimicked in orchiectomized animals by administration of 19‐nortestosterone hexyloxyphenylpropionate (NT) (Anadur®) given prior to but not after C. NT given prior to C also resulted in higher erythrocyte concentrations and packed blood cell volumes than in animals given only C. NT could not diminish the leukopenia induced by repeated administrations of C. A stimulation by NT of leukocyte count recovery also in patients might be of clinical importance especially in patients subjected to intermittent treatment with cytostatic agents.
