Abstract

A radio-over-fiber (RoF) downlink using a cross-polarization modulation (XPolM)-based all-optical single sideband (SSB) frequency up-conversion method in a semiconductor optical amplifier is experimentally demonstrated. A 10-Gb/s 16QAM orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signal at a carrier frequency of 60 GHz is transmitted. This RoF downlink shows a negligible power penalty associated with the chromatic dispersion of a single-mode fiber for a fiber length up to 20 km. The RoF downlink shows almost flat bit-error-rate performance for an optical IF signal wavelength range from 1550 to 1570 nm.
