Abstract

The mode transformation from the fundamental TE10 mode in rectangular waveguide to the TE01 mode in circular waveguide is of practical importance especially where there is a necessity for long transmission runs or in the case where high frequency operation is required. This results from the circular TE01 mode having a low transmission loss, owing to the fact that the majority of the mode's electric field distribution is concentrated away from the waveguide walls. Moreover, when compared to higher order modes there is less mode competition for the circular TE01 mode, reducing the number of possible modes that are supported in the device and thus simplifying the conversion process.
