Abstract
The use of X rays in the operating theatre has for long been a routine procedure, particularly during the Smith Petersen operation for fracture of the neck of the femur. X rays are also required for retrograde pyelography, cholangiography and, more recently, for arteriography and aortography. The use of mobile X-ray units is inconvenient owing to the obstruction of floor space adjacent to the operating table, which prevents full access of the surgeon and his assistants. In order to improve the X-ray facilities and to provide a unit instantly available without the need of porterage of a mobile unit from a potentially septic area, the Barnet Theatre X-ray unit was designed.
