Abstract

The performance of an imaging driftless gas scintillation proportional counter (GSPC) designed for the X-ray energy range 0.1–15 keV is presented. A driftless GSPC has several advantages over a standard GSPC, such as a higher background rejection capability. A rejection efficiency of 98.4% in the energy range 0.3–13 keV has been obtained by means of pulse shape discrimination only. The GSPC is read out by a pair of microchannel plates in a chevron configuration. We have measured FWHM energy resolutions of 19.2% and 9.9% for Al K (1.5 keV) and 55Fe (5.9 keV) X-rays, respectively. Position resolutions of 2.2 and 0.95 mm have been obtained for Al K and Ni K (7.5 keV) radiation, respectively. Both energy and position resolution are limited by the quantum efficiency of the CsI-coated front plate of the chevron.
