Abstract

Commercial Al bronzes (≈5 at% Fe, 13–28 at% Al) have been laser surface melted and investigated by glancing-angle X-ray diffraction. With increasing Al concentration of the Cu-Al-Fe alloys the following phases are retained: α, β' i and mixtures of β 1 β' i . The β 1-phase results from an ordering transformation of the high-temperature disordered bcc phase β and normally undergoes further transformation to one or more martensites. The rapid quenching results in β 1 retention (suppression of M s) at Al concentrations which are lower than what is usually observed with splat-quenching gun methods.
