Abstract

Abstract The crystal structures of “cis-terpin” (terpin hydrate) and “trans-terpin” were elucidated by X-ray crystallography. This crystal structure elucidation showed that the hydroxyl group at C-1 and the 1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl group at C-4 are in cis and trans relationships in the “cis-” and “trans-1,8-terpin” molecules, respectively, similarly to the structures in solutions. A new designation for discriminating between the configurational isomers is proposed on the ground of the IUPAC Rule for Nomenclature.
