Abstract

No more than a dozen cases of supernumerary nostril are reported in the literature. They have an accessory alae nasi or have double nose. (superscript 1-10) We encountered a 5 y/o girl who has a supernumerary nostril and a surplus septum, with left alar base hypoplasia and left anophthalamus. The embryologic aberrancy draw our attention. We assumed that around the 5th week in embryo development, before bilateral medial nasal process fuse, a fissure or splitting occurred in the right side medial process; thus resulting in a supernumerary septum and nostril. Besides maybe because the fissure is incomplete, so this accessory nostril has a blind end. We also found that among these babies, no sexial predominence existed and either side was equally involved; on the other hand, no hereditary association was noted.
