Abstract

Before restoration, a bronze An (dining table) of the Han dynasty (c. 175 BC) was analysed in order to assess its condition and to aid in drawing up a restoration plan. The study revealed the presence of an unusual lead chloro-phosphate mineral, pyromorphite. The analytical study of this lead corrosion product is discussed in detail. The corrosion mechanism was inferred from the results of the observations and analytical data. Pyromorphite was found to be stable in an environment of high relative humidity.
