Abstract

We present here an unpublished lead seal of Tiberios II (578-82) with the consular bust of Tiberios on the obverse and a cross potent on the reverse. This provides an opportunity to compare known types of seals of this emperor with his coin types and to review the importance of this reign in the abandonment of the last remaining imagery of the Roman pagan tradition (Victory on globe, Victory advancing or emperor in military garb) in favour of purely Christian types (cross on all gold coins and certain seals, Virgin on later seals).
