Abstract

Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel, I am Legend, has provided inspiration for three films, Sidney Salkow’s L’ultimo uomo della Terra/The Last Man on Earth (1964) starring Vincent Price, Boris Sagal’s The Omega Man (1971) starring Charlton Heston and Rosalind Cash, and Francis Lawrence’s I am Legend (2007) starring Will Smith (the direct to DVD I am Omega is not considered here). Although the novel has been a source for adaptation three times, the 1964 version is significant in its own right as a product of transnational film making, with an American star, Italian and American codirectors, U.S. setting created with Roman locations and its subsequent influence over both American and Italian horror films.
