Abstract

There it was on the front page – a large colour photograph of a 34-week unborn baby, apparently smiling ‘in the comfort of its mother's womb’ (Daily Telegraph, 2003). Irresistible. I bet every mother was looking at it and going ‘Aaah’. Me too. What a splendid advertisement for the private health clinic where the picture was taken, and for the doctor who has pioneered this scanner ‘which can be used as early as the seventh week of pregnancy’. Isn't technology wonderful?
