Abstract

This study employed both scanning and transmission electron microscopes. Cocci and rods predominated and were often attached to each other by fine filaments. The relationship between the bacteria and epithelium varied, but they were frequently connected by filaments. These filaments stained with both Ruthenium red and phosphotungstic acid. At times, bacteria were seen adjacent to breaks in the epithelial cell membranes and also free within the cytoplasm. The differing modes of bacterial attachment are discussed as are factors involved in colonization and invasion of the epithelium.
