Abstract

A new and improved type of mass spectrometer leak detector is described which has a sensitivity for helium of 10-13standard ml/sec*with a signal-to-noise ratio of one or better. Operating pressure is in the 10-5to 10-6 mm Hg range, time for two-thirds of final response is 2 sec or less and operating characteristics are similar to those of present helium sensitive mass spectrometer leak detectors. This greatly improved sensitivity has several important applications in vacuum tube technology which are briefly discussed.
