Abstract

In non-automated driven tram line operations in order to make planning and interfere within extraordinary states, traffic control center staff needs real-time data about the vehicles. Due to the harsh environment of tram lines, many of the previously presented vehicle tracking methods are not effective. In this study an RFID based vehicle tracking system is explained and a different architecture is proposed when compared with the use of other RFID based systems. Problems encountered in the integration of the RFID reader and the tags with the tram operation system are defined and the solutions for these problems are also given. The study is tested at one of the tram lines of Istanbul metropolitan city and set up a substructure for the other required systems as Passenger Information, Scheduling and Maintenance Planning.
