Abstract
A short overview of the role of bifilms (double oxide films) in cast Al alloys includes control of (1) grain size, because of the suppression of convection; (2) dendrite-arm spacing (DAS) as a result of isolated regions of liquid devoid of nuclei that consequently undercool; and (3) the mechanism of the modification of Al-Si alloys by Na and Sr, which is explained for the first time by the deactivation of bifilms as substrates for Si nucleation and growth.
