Abstract

In the never-ending quest, for a high-performance cement composite, Nano Engineered Cement Composites (NECC) are raising great expectations and garnering quite a bit of attention. It is expected to be the future material of construction technology. This review paper is an honest effort, to conduct exhaustive analysis, on the fracture performance of NECC. Starting with a brief introduction to nanomaterials, their governing effect on cement composites is summarized. Afterwards, an overview of fracture mechanics, applicable theories and specifications are discussed. Different non-destructive and microstructural characterization techniques, assisting the evaluation of fracture performance of NECC are reviewed. A thorough study, on the impact of nanomaterials individually, jointly and severally, affecting fracture properties of NECC matrix has been conducted. Various external factors affecting the same are also examined briefly. Further, the toughening mechanism of nanomaterials, in cement composites is discussed. However, there is still, various issues left to be resolved, before the practical application of NECC becomes a reality. Hence, possible further scope, for research endeavours are also pointed out.
