Abstract
Every year in the UK, over 30 000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and 10 000 men die from the disease (ISD Scotland, 2005; Northern Ireland Cancer Registry, 2005; Office for National Statistics, 2005a,b; Welsh Cancer Intelligence and Surveillance Unit, 2005a,b). Almost two-thirds of these registered are newly diagnosed men aged 70 years and over. It is now the most common cancer diagnosed in men in the UK (Cancer Research UK, 2006).
