Abstract

This paper provides an outline on optically switched power electronic devices—an area of increasing promise. Starting with an outline of the need and benefits of optically activated power electronics, a brief chronological overview of the past optical-technology work is provided, followed by some of the recent novel work conducted by the author's group. The latter focuses on optical power semiconductor device technologies at different voltage levels and relatively recent device controls technologies. Finally, looking forward, some of the potential application areas of photonic power electronics are captured.
