Abstract

Current tribology problems in magnetic recording technology are discussed including (a) flying of a magnetic recording slider at extremely small spacing, (b) evaluation of friction between slider and disk as a function of slider design and surface roughness, (c) surface roughness modifications by means of laser texturing, and (d) load/unload of a slider to reduce friction and wear during start/stop. In addition, future trends with regard to tribology problems in magnetic recording technology are examined.
