Abstract

A historical overview of the introduction and use of various contraceptive methods applied at the time of coitus is given. Results of the 1965 Westoff-Ryder study comparing present and previous use of each method in 1955 and 1965 in the U.S. are cited. Methods are ranked in order of decreasing effectiveness: 1) condom and diaphragm; 2) rhythm by basal body temperature aerosol foams coitus interruptus; 3) other intravaginal spermicidal techniques rhythm by calendar; 4) postcoital douche.
