Abstract
Measurement of the linear acoustic parameters of bone (speed of sound, SOS, and broadband attenuation, BUA) is the foundation of current bone ultrasonometry, which has become a well-established technique in osteoporosis diagnostics. Like X-ray densitometry techniques, QUS has been adapted to assess different skeletal sites consisting of different types of bone. Devices are currently available to measure easily accessible peripheral sites such as the heel, fingers, wrist or tibia. In this contribution, we will review the current state of development and we will outline a few promising developments.
